Medically known as hyperuricemia, high levels of uric acid in the blood may be due to increased production of the acid in the body. There are also times when it is caused by the kidneys are not excreting the acid properly. It can lead to a number of health problems, including gouty arthritis, which happens when there are uric acid crystals in the joints – often in the big toe. Other problems include kidney stones and renal failure. There are even studies that show having high blood uric acid can increase the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
You can control your uric acid levels with the following natural remedies:
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
This vinegar is a natural detoxifier that can get rid of wastes, including uric acid. ACV has malic acid that can metabolize and flush out uric acid. Adding a teaspoon of ACV to a glass of water and drinking this two to three times daily can restore the balance of alkaline and acid in the body.
2. Lemon Juice
You probably think that lemons can make your body more acidic, but they are actually alkaline when they enter the body. Just add the juice from one lemon to a glass of warm water and drink it before you have anything in the morning. Consume this for a few weeks.
These small fruits have chemicals, such as anthocyanins, a type of flavonoids that can reduce inflammation, stiffness, and uric acid. One-half cup of cherries for two weeks or more can help lower your uric acid levels. You can also drink one to two cups of tart cherry juice for a month. Aside from cherries, you can also go for dark berries, particularly purple and blue colored ones.
Because they have low purine content, eggs should be a part of your diet if you have high uric acid in the blood. Make sure you go for organic eggs though to help reduce your acid levels.
By simply drinking plenty of water can help optimize how the body filters uric acid. Water can even help stop recurrent gout attacks. A 2009 study showed that drinking five to eight glasses of water daily can reduce possible gout attacks by about 40%.
Aside from the natural remedies above, it helps if you know the foods that can increase your risk of suffering from gout attacks. These foods have high purine content, such as anchovies, mussels, yeast, herring, gravy, organ meats, and mackerel.
