If you take a bottle of insect repellent that you often buy at the store, and look at the back of a bottle you will see chemical names such as N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, N-diethyl-3-methyl-benzamide, 2-hydroxyethyl, and 1-methyl propyl.
But do you know what they are? Most people use these products without knowing what they are actually spraying on their bodies, but according to the website of the Environmental Protection Agency, these chemicals can be very dangerous for your health.
The effective ingredient of many insects, DEET, has been proven to be toxic to the central nervous system. In fact, the National Centers for Poison Control receives reports of up to 5,000 DEET-related poisonings. Studies also reveal that rats experienced behavioral changes after being frequently exposed to this chemical compound. Exposure to DEET can cause the death of neurons in parts of the brain leading to memory, learning, and problems with muscle movement.
