The blockage of blood vessels inside the eye or blurry vision cause complete loss of vision, depending on the degree of clogging. This condition is also called infarction (eye stroke, or retinal infarction), as in other parts of the body, and can occur in the arteries or veins of the eye. When those vessels narrow or get blocked by a blood clot, the blood supply is cut off.
Hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and obesity are the most significant risk factors for developing eye infarction. Some studies suggest that people with high blood pressure are twice as likely to have a blockage or narrowing of blood vessels and that this risk increases, by as much as six times, to those with higher blood pressure and smokers.
Stomach obesity increases the risk
In order to prevent an eye stroke or sudden loss of vision in one eye, it is necessary to take the prevention of several diseases, especially obesity, metabolic syndrome, prediabetes, diabetes, and arteriosclerosis – explain the specialists of the Institute of Endocrinology, diseases of diabetes and metabolism. A few years ago, they studied the condition of more than 60 patients, looking for risk factors that could cause a sudden loss of vision in one eye.
Their results showed that the sudden blockage of arteries occurs in patients aged 50 to 80 years. Vision loss usually occurs in one eye, and in 46 percent of cases, it occurs in people who have high blood pressure or diabetes. All patients, doctors said, had abdominal obesity, moderately elevated blood pressure and fat in the blood.
A worrying fact is that prediabetes was found in 31 percent of patients with retinal artery occlusion, and diabetes was most pronounced in 40 percent of patients with retinal vein occlusion, and 60 percent of patients had decreased blood flow to the optic nerve.
Eat Mediterranean food
Analyzes also indicate that 50 percent of patients who have experienced some form of eye stroke are rare smokers, while patients with arterial obstruction are smokers in 100 percent of cases.
Patients are advised to lose weight and reduce stomach obesity. It is recommended to prepare food on healthy menus, rich in dietary fiber and complex carbohydrates from fruits, vegetables, grains, as well as monounsaturated fat from olive oil – experts say.
