Here Are 7 Biggest Myths About Periods That You May Still Believe

We all have a tendency to believe in different stories, and the myths our grandmothers still believed in are passed down from generation to generation, even though our modern society is much more educated.

Despite scientific advances in medicine and the opinions of experts, many women still believe in some common myths about the women’s cycle. Today we have decided to present to you the most common misconceptions about the cycle and the truth behind it:

Myth # 1: Having menstruation every month means you are fertile
Regular menstruation is a great indicator of fertility and means you have ovulation, but fertility requires much more than that. To be fertile, you must have healthy eggs, uterus and fallopian tubes. Unfortunately, having regular periods every month does not mean you can get pregnant when you want.

Myth # 2: You cannot get pregnant during your period
This is somewhat true, but since healthy sperm can remain in your reproductive system for days and the cycle varies, you may actually become pregnant. Also, not every vaginal bleeding is menstrual – some women get minimal bleeding that occurs when they are near ovulation.

Myth # 3: You should not miss the menstrual cycle
If you take contraceptive pills, the menstrual cycle can “jump” because of hormones that affect the lining of the uterus, writes Cosmopolitan. If you do not take contraceptive pills and your menstruation skips a month or more, be sure to consult a gynecologist.

Myth # 4: You should not exercise or swim during your period
In the past, it was believed that women should rest during menstruation and that any intense physical activity could lead to increased bleeding and pain. Scientists say that exercise before and during the cycle can actually help eliminate pain and reduce food cravings.

Myth # 5: Premenstrual syndrome is a lie
This is not true – premenstrual syndrome is real and occurs because of hormones secreted after the ovulation. These hormones cause fatigue, mood swings, chest pain, insomnia and bloating.

Myth # 6: The tampon can be “lost” in your vagina
This myth is largely based on insufficient knowledge of the anatomy of the human body and vagina. The cervix prevents the tampon from penetrating deeper so that if an accident occurs, you can remove it with your fingers.

Myth # 7: Scary and unbearable pain is normal
It is a pain that paralyzes you and prevents you from getting out of bed and fulfilling your daily duties. It is believed that pain during the cycle is normal, but painful menstruation can be an indicator of another problem. Therefore, if you have terribly intolerable menstruation, be sure to schedule a gynecological examination.
