The sweet, unique, delicate taste of a succulent mango brings the tropics to your plate. Although the tree is in the same family as the poison oak and ivy, the mango is far from dangerous: it actually promotes human health in various ways, from digestion to immunity.
1. Eye Care
Bright orange-yellow flash is a dead giveaway for mango’s vitamin A. Critical to eye health, vitamin A is also required for bone and tooth development.
The vitamin C contained in this fruit is important for a fully functional immune system and collagen production. This vitamin also plays a role in the absorption of iron.
Enzymes and fibers contained in mango help digestion. A study of mango diets as a cure for chronic constipation found:
“Compared with fiber consumption, mango consumption in the treatment of chronic constipation had more adherence, improved intestinal evacuation parameters, decreased endotoxin production, decreased inflammation, and increased short-chain fatty acid concentrations, all of which have been established to contribute to intestinal health and wellness. ”
3. Alkalizes the body
Mango is an alkaline food that balances the internal acid level – a pH lower than neutral is associated with kidney disease, muscle damage, and osteoporosis.
The antioxidants contained in mango act as an anti-inflammatory in the body, with antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral effects.
4. Fights Cancer
Mango contains antioxidants that fight cancer like quercetin, isoquercitrin, astragalin, fisetin, gallic acid, and methyl gallate.
A study from the A&M University of Texas found that mango fruit reduced the proliferation of breast cancer cells and prevented the formation of new cancer cells:
“These results of the study indicate that the cell-killing effects of mango polyphenols are specific to cancer cells, where inflammation was reduced in both cancer and non-cancer cells, seemingly through the involvement of miRNA-21 — short microRNA molecules associated with cancer…The tumor-fighting potential of mango polyphenolics may at least in part be based on those same properties which reduced cancer cell proliferation and reduce inflammation that may be involved in carcinogenesis.”
5. Weight loss
These fruits act as medicines in the treatment of metabolic disorders and in preventing weight gain, reducing LDL cholesterol in the process.
This may be due to the same phytochemicals that regulate blood sugar; mango itself has a low glycemic index and stimulates the pancreas function
One study found that over a four-week period, diabetic patients’ blood sugar levels were the same as non-diabetics when their diets were supplemented with this fruit.
6. High Antioxidants Levels
The leaves of this fruit have long been used to treat many ailments: diarrhea, anemia, asthma, insomnia, snake bite, liver disorders, and many others.
The high antioxidant content—mangiferin the most abundant—found in all parts of the mango tree (including the fruit) is responsible for its ability to regulate healthy cell activity.
Perhaps most interesting is that mango has been found to increase virility in men and libido activity for both sexes.
Vitamin E in mango, which regulates hormones and improves blood flow, sperm production, and sex drive, is partly due to this.
Perhaps more important in this context is the amino acid arginine, which has been found to successfully treat erectile dysfunction.
Since mangoes are especially succulent, they can help you stay hydrated during a hot day. For a refreshing drink, chop up a mango, put it in a blender with some water, and add ice if necessary. It’s perfect for preventing heatstroke.
9. Strengthens The Immune System
Mango also contains nutrients that boost immunity like Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and more carotenoids. Eating more mangoes can be helpful in preventing colds and flu as well as other common ailments.
10. Lowers Cholesterol

Mango also contains an amazing compound called glutamine acid, a brain-healthy protein.
One study found that “it obviously plays an important role in neuronal differentiation, migration, and survival in the developing brain … Glutamate also plays a critical role in synaptic maintenance and plasticity,” meaning it is the perfect fruit to enhance memory and concentration.
Even mangoes can be turned into flour – with amazing effects.
Containing amino acids that the human body needs in addition to protein, antibacterials, fats, and antioxidants, one study went so far that “Mango (Mangifera indica Linn.) Is one of the most important tropical fruits in the world.”
Mango flour is used in baking in India – when mango bark powder is added, the antioxidant properties and delicate taste of mango are added to the pastry.
A good source of protein with noticeable levels of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, mango kernel flour is much more nutritious than wheat.
