Everything You Need to Know About Vitiligo: Causes and Methods of Treatment

Vitiligo is a skin disease characterized by the appearance of white spots on the skin that are irregular in shape. These depigmentation zones may be single or multiple and may be localized throughout the body. Most often affects the hands and feet. Very often vitiligo is accompanied by other diseases that have an autoimmune genesis.

Accompanying diseases can be:
– diabetes,
– thyroid diseases (thyrotoxicosis),
– hypofunction of the adrenal cortex.

Of great importance are the unpleasant emotions and destructive stress. A current treatment approach against the disease is the irradiation of the skin with a certain spectrum of rays. The method is effective but does not apply to people over 60 because of the risk of other disabilities.

Another option is laser therapy.

It has no serious contraindications but is less effective than radiation. Operations with grafting of healthy skin from another person on damaged areas are also done. In this case, there is a danger that foreign cells may be rejected.

Sometimes it helps herbal treatment with recipes applied since antiquity. These include herbs – St John’s wort, chamomile, basil, nettle, sage, and marigold. Patients need to live healthy, not abusing alcohol and cigarettes. It’s sensible to include more pigment-enhancing foods such as carrots, figs, walnuts, apricots, celery, parsley.

Vitiligo treatment also includes a special diet. Some foods should be completely removed from the menu.

Prohibited foods:
meat and meat products,
milk and dairy products,
White flour,
white sugar,
fine-grained salt,
animal oil,
preserved products,
green beans,

Allowed foods:
sea fish and other fishery products,
fruits and vegetables.

It is important to accept:
Vitamin C,
vitamin B12,
carrots – 200-300 grams,
dried grapes,
nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts).

Some ointments are also used to treat vitiligo, which is again based on herbs. Some of the most used herbs for the preparation of such ointments are greater celandine, a wild fig tree, and others.
