It is no exaggeration to say that turmeric is the spice of life! When my doctor told me that my genetics and weight put me at greater risk for cardiovascular disease than normal for my age, I knew something had to change.
I completely turned my lifestyle upside down. I started practicing every day, I kept my heart healthy with the Mediterranean diet and started to supplement my daily turmeric diet.
I must say that this is not the first time I dramatically change my diet. But I found that every time I do it, any lost weight quickly returns. Losing weight in the abdomen is especially problematic.
This time, I took advice from a naturopath and added my turmeric diet. And that made everything different! Recent studies have made some interesting findings of turmeric that support my experience with it.
Turmeric for weight loss
A recent study conducted in South Korea has found that curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, is able to turn “bad” white fats into “good” brown fats. Are you confused? Not surprisingly, given that many people still do not know that the fat in our body is composed of a ratio of good (brown) and bad (white) fat. Different fat cells have equally different uses in your body. Brown fat is transformed into energy and warmth in the body, while white fat is primarily responsible for storing energy for future use as fat.
In obese people, brown fat is deficient, while white fat is abundant. It is only recently proven that white fats can be transformed into brown fats, so it is exciting to see that turmeric, one of the most common spices, is a promising supplement for weight loss.
A Korean study identifies four mechanisms, that allow curcumin to promote change in white fat cells:
This changes the genetic tendency of cells to brown fat cells.
It encourages the creation of new mitochondria in the cells to replace mitochondria damaged by obesity.
This increases the levels of proteins responsible for the degradation and elimination of fat.
It improves your metabolic processes by increasing the activity of a protein kinase.
Turmeric and inflammation
The effects of turmeric on weight loss are not based solely on its effects on your fat ratio. Curcuma has been found to effectively reduce inflammation, a major symptom associated with obesity. Anti-inflammatory effect curcumin on cells is shown to reverse insulin resistance and other symptoms associated with obesity. By limiting these basic symptoms, you can make it easier for your body to keep off weight gain.
Many benefits of turmeric!
Curcuma is not only useful for weight loss but has been shown to be effective in treating a number of health problems including:
